Problem: USB Flash Drive Files Changed to Shortcuts
'Anyone who knows how to solve my problem, please help me! I use a USB flash drive as a backup drive to store the very important files and documents. This morning when I inserted the flash drive into my laptop and tried to open a file, to my huge surprise, all of my files in it turned into shortcuts. Actually, the file names are the same as I saved earlier, but the used space shows 0 bytes. I believe the files are still there, but how to convert shortcut files into original files without destroying the file quality?'
It's a common problem that's happened to almost all of us. The error results from USB shortcut virus. You cannot access the file which is infected by shortcut virus, however, if you check the property you'll find that the used space is as same as the original file, which means the shortcut virus just changed your files into some icons but doesn't eat them up. To open the actual data file infected by shortcut virus, you should remove the virus by the first attempt, and then try to recover shortcut virus files with the following suggestions.

If you need quick access to files on a USB flash drive regularly—or use an application located on one—you can create a keyboard shortcut to save yourself some time.
Weblog Into Windows explains how to set up the USB drive shortcut, and it only takes a few simple steps:
- Connect the USB drive to your PC and backup the data on it. This is important because you'll be assigning a unique letter name and it may require formatting the drive.
- Open disk management—you can navigate there or hit Windows Key + R and then type 'diskmgmt.msc'—and find the USB drive. Right-click the drive and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
- Click the Change button and select a new, unique drive letter. Then click OK and Yes in the following dialog boxes.
- Open Windows Explorer, right-click on the USB drive with it's uniquely assigned letter, and select Create shortcut. It'll appear on your desktop. Right-click it and select Properties.
- Go to the Shortcut tab and find the Shortcut key box. Enter your custom keyboard shortcut and hit Apply.

After the virus attack I was so much worried because I did not have any backup copies of those files . Then I have used this simple method and It has made me relieved. So what I have done to fix this problem ? I am sharing my tip so that you can follow the same thing and fix this unwanted problem. The method I am going to share is very easy. You don’t need to use any complex CMD command . You just need to use a software named 7-ZIP file manager. This software is used to extract zipped files but we will use its file management feature so that those virus can’t execute their process as we all know that Explorer.exe will treat those shortcut things as legitimate.

Now you will be able to see your files in an empty folder. Now Press CTRL+A to Mark your files and folders and press copy on top of 7-zip.
Now save them on anywhere in your Hardisk. After doing all of this Format your pendrive.

This Antivirus has its own unique algorithm that is far better than the Traditional antivirus need-to-update method, which when not followed gives the user a false sense of security and makes his/her computer more vulnerable and thus spreads viruses even more. Since most viruses infect your computer through Memory Sticks/Cards, TownScape using their general modes of operation uses a blanket algorithm and probability to find viruses . This is not a virus scanner rather TownSpece USB Antivirus is a virus hunter.
