Pet Skills
Your pet can learn skills. New skills are taught by using “Beast Training” (found in your spell book).
There is a Pet Trainer (usually found near the hunter trainer) that teaches abilities like Growl (taunt), Great Stamina and Natural Armour. But there are other skills available to pets that can only be learnt by taming certain beasts. For example, Cats can use Claw, Boars can use Charge & bats can use Dive.
To learn these skills you have to find a beast that knows the skill, tame it and use the skill a few times to learn it. You can then teach that skill to any other pet you have that is eligible. We have a list of all the skills, their different ranks and what beast you have to tame to learn it on our Vanilla Wow Pet Skills page.

1. Beast Mastery Hunter Single-Target Rotation
The Beast Mastery rotation revolves around castingKill Command on cooldown, not capping your Focus, whilesimultaneously not casting Cobra Shot so much that you waste itscooldown reduction and delay Kill Command unnecessarily.
The single target rotation for a Beast Mastery Hunter is based onthe following priority system.
- Cast Barbed Shot when the Frenzy buff on your petis about to expire or when you are close to 2 charges of Barbed Shot, refreshing Frenzy as late as possible without dropping it. This is a higherpriority than not wasting Bestial Wrath cooldown reduction. If Frenzy isnot up, and Bestial Wrath is active, cast Barbed Shot regardless.
- Cast Bestial Wrath on cooldown. If Aspect of the Wildis coming up within 20 seconds, delay it to sync them up.
- Cast Aspect of the Wild on cooldown. If Bestial Wrathis coming up within the next 20 seconds, then delay Aspect of the Wild to line it up with Bestial Wrath.
- Cast Kill Command on cooldown. Try to not castanything right before it, so that you can cast it the very instant it comesoff cooldown.
- Cast Chimaera Shot on cooldown.
- Cast A Murder of Crows on cooldown.
- When Frenzy is down, cast Barbed Shot when you are about to reach2 charges of it. If you cast it too early, you will not be able to reach 3 stacks and maintainit for very long.
- Cast Cobra Shot when you havea lot of Focus to burn, and when Kill Command is notcoming off cooldown within 2.5 seconds.
- You should cast Barbed Shot during otherwise empty GCDs (whenyou have nothing else to do), as long as it has more than 1.4 charges remaining(meaning that part of the second charge is regenerated).
There are a few rules you should keep in mind when trying to play BeastMastery optimally. If you keep these things in mind, it will make it much easierto achieve a perfect rotation:
- Generally speaking, you should not cast more than 2 Cobra Shotsin between Kill Commands. 2 is the sweet spot where you are spendingas much Focus as you are generating, while also not wasting the cooldownreduction on Kill Command.
- Refreshing Frenzy as late as possible is almost alwayspreferable. You should be careful not to overdo it, however, or you riskletting the buff drop completely.
- You should avoid casting Cobra Shot when there is less than 2.5seconds remaining on Kill Command's cooldown, unlessyou are on 90 Focus or above.
- Remember that casting Chimaera Shot on cooldown is only a highpriority if you will not Focus cap from casting it. If you are at 100 Focus orabove, then it is better to cast something else first.
- Sometimes, you will run into a situation where you are forced to castBarbed Shot right when Bestial Wrath is coming offcooldown. As bad as this feels, it is worth it in order to refreshFrenzy.
- It is worth casting Barbed Shot regardless of your chargestatus if Frenzy is down, and Bestial Wrath is up. Theidea is that you always want at least one stack of Frenzy active duringBestial Wrath, even if you cannot reach 3 stacks on it.
Keep in mind that you will not be able to keep up 3 stacks ofFrenzy at all times. You should strive towards it, but itis impossible to always have it up. Dropping it sometimes is fine.
Important Note: Because the in-game 'auto-cast' system for Hunter petsis very slow, it is recommended to put these 3 lines into macros for all ofyour offensive spells.
- /cast Claw
- /cast Bite
- /cast Smack
We recommend adding these 3 lines to the end of your macros, in orderfor the #showtooltip part of your macros to work properly. Functionally,it makes no difference where you put them.
This ensures that you will always cast your pet's Basic Attack oncooldown, since Blizzard's automatic cast will delay each cast by up to 0.6seconds.
In addition to the above, you will also have to make use of severalcooldowns, as we explain below.
1.1. Keeping Track of Frenzy
The default UI does not offer a very good way of keeping track of the Frenzybuff on your pet, which is very important to the spec. To help with this, werecommend using this WeakAura to keeptrack of the buff. You can also use thisWeakAura, which will pop up and tell you when to use Barbed Shot. Bothof these require you to have theWeakAuras 2 Addoninstalled.
2. Multiple Target Rotation for Beast Mastery Hunter
When facing more than 1 target, you should generally follow the priorityabove, but with these changes at certain target counts:
Firstly, whenever fighting more than 1 target, Chimaera Shothas a higher priority than Kill Command.
When fighting 2 targets or above, you should start trying to keep upBeast Cleave. You should not do so at the expense ofKill Commands, but you should instead sacrifice some Cobra Shotcasts in order to Multi-Shot every 2-3 globals.
When fighting 3 targets or above, you should keep up Beast Cleaveat all times, even at the expense of Kill Command. You should stillprioritize refreshing Frenzy on 3 stacks, since the attack speed buffit gives you is a massive increase to Beast Cleave damage.
Most importantly, regardless of how hard you are trying to keep up BeastCleave, you should be careful not to cast too many Multi-Shots. You need oneevery 4 seconds and no more than that. SpammingMulti-Shot is never worth it. If you have extra Focus tospend, you are better off casting Cobra Shot.
The exception to this rule is if you are using the powerful Rapid Reload. This Trait causes Multi-Shot to reduce the cooldown of Aspect of the Wildby 1 second for each target hit. This means that you should alwaysprioritize Multi-Shot over Cobra Shot when using this Trait.
Finally, you stop using Kill Command on 4 targets, if you haveRapid Reload.
3. Cooldown Usage for Beast Mastery Hunter
As a Beast Mastery Hunter, you have two important cooldowns, namely Bestial Wrath and Aspect of the Wild. You should aimto use Bestial Wrath as many times as possible in the encounter, but there areseveral subtleties regarding its use, and we describe all of them later on inthe guide. Aspect of the Wild should generally be used in conjunction withBestial Wrath at all times.
More details about cooldown usage, as well as information about thecooldowns you gain from talents can be found in ourdetailed cooldown usage section.
4. Opener Sequence for Beast Mastery Hunter
This section describes the recommended way to start the fight as a BeastMastery Hunter. It assumes you are using the recommended talents for thespec.
- Just before the encounter starts, use your combat potion.
- About 1.5 seconds before the encounter starts, useAspect of the Wild.
- Activate Bestial Wrath.
- Cast Barbed Shot once.
- Cast Kill Command.
- Cast A Murder of Crows.
- Cast Chimaera Shot.
- Cast Cobra Shot.
- Cast Kill Command.
- When Frenzy is just about to expire on your pet, useBarbed Shot again to refresh it. If you can delay it further than thispoint, then you should do so.
- Cast Cobra Shot.
- Cast Kill Command.
- Proceed with your normal rotation.
5. Primal Instincts Opener Sequence for Beast Mastery Hunter
This section describes the recommended way to start the fight as a BeastMastery Hunter if you areusing the Primal Instincts trait. It assumes you are using the recommended talents for the spec.
- Just before the encounter starts, use your combat potion.
- About 1.5 seconds before the encounter starts, useBestial Wrath.
- Cast Barbed Shot twice.
- Cast Aspect of the Wild.
- Cast A Murder of Crows.
- Cast Kill Command.
- Cast Chimaera Shot.
- Cast Cobra Shot.
- Cast Kill Command.
- When Frenzy is just about to expire on your pet, useBarbed Shot again to refresh it. If you can delay it further than thispoint, then you should do so.
- Proceed with your normal rotation.
6. Optional Read: Mastering Your Beast Mastery Hunter
While the rotations we gave in the previous sections will yield very goodresults, there are many things you should be aware of, in order to play yourBeast Mastery Hunter to its full potential. You will need tounderstand all the subtleties, pertaining to your abilities, rotations, andcooldown usage, that we present below.
6.1. Focus
Hunters and their pets use a unique resource, called Focus. Focus worksin much the same way as other class resources, like Rage and Energy, inthe sense that some abilities grant Focus, while others cost Focus to beused.
A Beast Mastery Hunter's Focus has a maximum capacity of 120,and regenerates at a slow rate that varies by spec. In addition to thispassive flow of incoming Focus, certain talents and abilities will amplifyyour Focus regeneration, or simply generate more of it.
Most of the abilities in the hunter rotation cost Focus to use, and sometalents decrease the Focus costs, or offer other ways to gain additionalFocus.
Hunter pet Focus works similarly, and is of no concern to you as you cannotdo anything to modify it, nor will you be casting pet abilities manually.
As a general rule, you should always have enough Focus to castyour abilities as soon as they come off cooldown, but also to never have120 Focus (as any extra Focus you generate would then go towaste).
6.2. Auto-shots and Special Shots
Hunters do the majority of their damage through the use of shots. Therest of the damage is made up of pet damage and DoT damage.
Autoshot is the default Hunter attack, which works similarly tomelee classes' auto attacks or 'white swings'. It is affected by yourRanged Attack Speed, and it continues to work while moving.
The other hunter shots are of all varieties: instant cast or with a casttime, costing Focus or granting Focus, and some are utility shots whichcost no Focus and deal no damage.
One of the most important aspects of doing competitive Hunter DPS is to makesure your shots are always used without delay.
6.3. Pet Contribution
The greatest contribution to your DPS is your pet's damage, both throughits simple melee attacks and through Kill Command. Forthis reason, it is important that your pet is always on the target, staysalive, and that you always cast Kill Command on cooldown. Keep this inmind, otherwise your DPS will plummet.
There are a few useful things to remember regarding pet movement.
Most importantly, when you are switching targets, if you simply target a newenemy and use Kill Command, your pet will cast KillCommand on its current (your old) target. Therefore, you must always makesure to tell your pet to first change target (through the Pet Attack command),and then use Kill Command. The easiest way to do this seamlessly is byincluding a '/petattack' line in your Kill Command macro.
6.4. Detailed Cooldown Usage
6.4.1. Bestial Wrath
Bestial Wrath should be used as many times as possible duringthe encounter. In order to ensure that you cast as many high-damaging shotsduring the damage buff, youshould always make sure that you have as much Focus as possible before usingBestial Wrath, but without capping on Focus. As well as starting your BestialWrath with maximum Focus, you should end it with as little Focus aspossible.
Aspect of the Wild should be used alongsideBestial Wrath whenever possible, and it is typically worth delayingit until Bestial Wrath is within 5 seconds of coming off cooldown. CastingAspect of the Wild during Bestial Wrath itself is not optimal, butit is still better than delaying it until after Bestial Wrath.
When using Primal Instincts, you should try and dump your existingBarbed Shot charges right before entering Aspect of the Wild, in orderto get the most out of the generated Barbed Shot charge.
A Murder of Crows should be used on cooldown, although it can and should be delayed a bit to overlap withBestial Wrath if the opportunity arises.
6.4.2. Tier 1 Talents
Killer Instinct does not have a significant effect on yourrotation.
Animal Companion does not have a significant effect on yourrotation.
Dire Beast should simply be used on cooldown. It can be worthdelaying it slightly if you can use it right before Bestial Wrath, allowing you to stack the 5% Haste buff with Bestial Wrath.
6.4.3. Tier 2 Talents
Scent of Blood does not have a significant effect on yourrotation.
One with the Pack does not have a significant effect on yourrotation.
Chimaera Shot should simply be used on cooldown. Try to use itwhen you are at a Focus deficit, so that you do not waste its Focusgeneration.
6.4.4. Tier 4 Talents
Venomous Bite does not have a significant effect on yourrotation.
Marshall hall finally free pista. Thrill of the Hunt does not have a significant effecton your rotation. You will automatically get everything out of the buffas long as you keep up your Frenzy buff with Barbed Shotbecause the buffs share a duration.
A Murder of Crows should be cast on cooldown. You can get even moredamage out of it by casting it on targets that are about 10 seconds from dying. When they die, this will reset the cooldown of the ability and allow you touse it again for a large damage boost.
6.4.5. Tier 6 Talents
Stomp does not have a significant effect on your rotation.
Barrage should be used on cooldown, even on a single target, although you should be careful not to let it mess up your Frenzy timings orother abilities. Furthermore, if there is imminent AoE coming up thenyou should delay it for that. It is not a high priority to cast on a singletarget.
Stampede should be used on cooldown along withBestial Wrath, and when there are multiple targets up. You shouldbe careful not to use it when the targets in its path are about to move.
6.4.6. Tier 7 Talents
Aspect of the Beast does not have a significant effect on yourrotation.
Killer Cobra makes it even more important to have as much Focusready for Bestial Wrath as possible. It does not fundamentallychange your playing. For the most part during Bestial Wrath, you will simplybe alternating between Cobra Shot andKill Command, with Cobra Shot constantly resettingKill Command's cooldown.
Spitting Cobra should be used on cooldown along withBestial Wrath.

1. Addons for Elemental Shaman
1.1. ElvUI
ElvUI is a complete replacement for the default User Interface. Not only isthis a popular AddOn among top players, but we here at Icy Veins use it for allour characters. ElvUI eliminates most of the inefficiencies of the Blizzardinterface, which are many and varied. It is extremely user friendly, and takesvery little time to set up and master. It also comes already furnished withalmost everything you need; unit frames, raid frames, minimap, buffs anddebuffs, and much more. You can easily unlock and drag all the componentsaround so your UI will look exactly the way you want it to. ElvUI is clean, easy to use, and a great starting point for your UI.
For a quick configuration guide, you can check out Pandacho's guide.
1.2. Weak Auras
Weak Auras is the most important AddOn for players seeking to master theirclass and take their gameplay to new heights. If you aspire to do any Mythicraiding, this is the most powerful tool in your kit. Weak Auras allows you todisplay helpful visuals cues anywhere on your screen, which enable you to playbetter. Most players use it to track their trinket procs, highlight on screendisplays of their most important cooldowns, or track the timers of bossmechanics. It is highly customisable and makes keeping track of your procs andcooldowns effortless. The drawback of Weak Auras is that is has a bit of alearning curve and is not the most user friendly. Weak Auras allows you toimport other players data directly into their UI, however, and most playerschoose to simply import other people's Weak Auras rather than make their own.Weak Auras can be used to create just about anything you can imagine, as it isa LUA scripting tool (essentially an AddOn that creates other AddOns, in-game).This is by far the most essential AddOn for players looking to step into Mythicraiding.
1.3. Boss Mods
Boss Mods are helpful pre-made timers that allow you to keep track of thenoteworthy mechanics in any given encounter. Usually they come equipped withhelpful prompts, visuals, and sounds to ensure you do not miss anythingimportant.
1.3.1. BigWigs Bossmods
BigWigs is the bestboss mod available currently. It is extremely customizable, allowing you tochange what is displayed on an individual boss level and how boldly you wanteach alert customized. BigWigs is typically the most accurate and periodicallyupdated of the available Boss Mods. It does not require any setup at all, though there are a dizzying array of options and customizations should you wishto personalize your setup.
1.3.2. Deadly Boss Mods
Deadly BossMods is an alternative to BigWigs, though it usually is not as accurateearly in the patch. Most of the alerts are loud and flashy by default, makingthis a potentially good choice for players who have very little experience in araid environment.
1.4. Name Plates
Nameplates are essential for allowing you to easily keep track of basicdebuffs and quickly select new targets in combat. While ElvUI nameplates docome standard with the AddOn, they are a little limited and occasionally buggy.Listed below are some good alternatives.
1.4.1. KUI Nameplates
KUI Nameplatesoffer the highest degree of customization and accuracy. For example, you caneasily configure the nameplates to enlarge and change color when a targetreaches a certain percentage of health, which can be very helpful for classeswith executes. They always correctly display your debuffs, and their click boxis very accurate. Some setup is required, although it is very simple andstraightforward.
1.4.2. TidyPlates
TidyPlates arenot quite as customizable or accurate as KUI, but they are an improvement overthe default UI or the ElvUI nameplates. They are also great out of the box, requiring little to no setup at all, which is a plus for some players.
1.5. Damage Meters
Damage meters display a variety of helpful data about what is taking placein combat, from your current DPS (or HPS) to the number of interrupts eachplayer successfully used.
1.5.1. Skada
Skada is a lightweightdamage meter that is exceptionally accurate. It doesn't take up much memory, which could cause you to lag, and displays a wide range of helpful data. Thisis the recommended damage meter if you log your raid data to WarcraftLogs.
1.5.2. Details
Details is a moreheavyweight damage meter, taking up quite a bit of memory. It offers extensivein-game analysis tools compared to Skada, however, allowing you to break downyour data in depth without leaving the game. This is the recommended damagemeter if you do not log your raid data.
1.6. Extra AddOns
These AddOns are just small trimmings that might make your life a little easier.
1.6.1. Mik's Scrolling Battle Text
If you not not satisfied with the default combat text, this AddOn isan alternative that allows you to heavily customize your scrolling combat text.Quite a bit of setup is required.
1.6.2. Death Note
Death Note displaysthe last several deaths for each of your party or raid members. For 30 secondsprior to their death, a complete timestamp of their combat log is displayed, showing their current health, what heals they received, what buffs and debuffsthey had, whether they used their personal cooldowns, etc. This AddOn ishelpful for breaking down your own death as well as finding out whether thatguy really did use his healthstone.
1.6.3. Doom CooldownPulse
Whenever one of your abilities comes off cooldown, this AddOn flashes alarge transparent version of the ability in the center of your screen, alertingyou that it is off cooldown. You can easily configure what is displayed, or useit by default.
1.6.4. Angry Assignments
This AddOnallows you to set up text assignments that are displayed to everyone else inthe raid group that have the AddOn. Extremely beneficial for raiding guilds, particularly when assigning jobs like interrupt orders, or what players aresoaking in what quadrants of the room, etc.

2. Addons
2.1. Generic Addons for Paladins
2.1.1. ElvUI
Here, at Icy Veins, we useElvUIfor all our characters. This addon is a complete replacement of the defaultUser Interface. It comes with almost everything you need to perform properly:action bars, cooldown timers, proc display, etc.
We strongly recommend that you get this addon and our forum moderator Pandacho has writtena quick configuration guide for it.
2.1.2. Boss Mods: Deadly Boss Mods or Bigwigs
Boss mods are addons that warn you about boss abilities and give youlive advice on how to handle some mechanics. We strongly recommend you toget one such addon. At Icy Veins, we mostly useDeadly Boss Mods, the most popular boss mod. A good alternative isBig Wigs.
2.1.3. GTFO
GTFO is a lightweightaddon that notifies you when you are standing in harmful effects or when youare making other such mistakes. It is very useful, even if your boss mod isalready alerting you of such things.
2.1.4. Parrot or Mik's Scrolling Battle Text
Parrot andMik's Scrolling Battle Text are highlycustomisable addons for displaying floating battle text while in combat (incomingheals, damage of your spells, etc.). They both work very well by default.
2.1.5. Recount / Skada / Details!
Recount is awell known addon that most people use for displaying current DPS or HPS(Healing Per Second). This add-on is not really lightweight, and provides avery high amount of information (and it can sometimes cause issues withperformance). It is generally a good option to use Recount for checking what youtake damage from and if the share of damage/healing you do with each of yourabilities is similar to that of other players of your class.
An alternative to Recount (similar in function, so the choice is personalpreference) is Details!.
A lightweight alternative to Recount and Details! is Skada Damage Meter.
2.1.6. Weak Auras
WeakAuras is anextremely useful addon that allows you to have visual effects on your screen, helping you track your buffs, debuffs and cooldowns. It is highly customisableand it can make it much, much easier to keep track of your procs and play yourspec more proficiently. It can also be used for a variety of otherfunctions.
2.1.7. TellMeWhen
TellMeWhen is anextremely useful addon with a user-friendly interface that allows you to tracka multitude of things, from internal cooldowns, to buffs, debuffs, andprocs.
2.1.8. Omen Threat Meter
Omen Threat Meteris the most popular addon for displaying the current threat levels on yourtarget. We recommend you to use it to avoid taking aggro when the tank is still buildingup threat on an enemy.
2.1.9. Grid and GridClickSets (Optional)
ElvUI comes with decent raid frames. The only real reason for usingGrid andGridClickSetsis if you want to be able to mouseover party or raid members in order to castyour various utility spells (such as hand spells) on them. If you choose to gowith Grid, then you might want to also use GridStatusRaidDebuff.
2.2. Specific Addons for Retribution Paladins
2.2.1. Hekili
Hekili is a usefuladdon that can help you execute your rotation.
